This project aims to address the challenges and gaps in current stroke services, such as lack of local specialists, the delays in diagnosis and treatment, and the lack of integration and security of remote consultation services.

Challenge:

The existing remote diagnosis systems were not integrated, secure or user-friendly, and they depend on dedicated devices and network services that may not be available or reliable. These challenges result in delays, inefficiencies, for stroke patients, especially during late evening and overnight periods when local specialists may not be available. To address these challenges, HSL developed a next generation Telehealth solution that enables remote consultation and diagnoses of stroke patients by expert neurologists using a simple app on a tablet, smartphone or laptop. This solution is integrated with the Health Service infrastructure, assures security and privacy, and allows the results to be included in the electronic care record.

Solution

One of HSL’s flagship projects is the Telestroke service, which aims to improve the outcomes of stroke patients in Northern Ireland. The project was initiated by HSL CEO Dominic Walsh, who envisioned a system that would enable remote consultation and diagnosis of stroke patients by expert neurologists. He presented his idea to a group of leading consultants in June 2019, and received positive feedback and support. The project then entered the clinical trial phase, where HSL worked closely with the health authorities and the hospitals to develop and test a medical grade solution that meets the highest standards of quality and safety. The Telestroke service allows stroke patients to receive timely and effective care, regardless of their location or the availability of local specialists. The project has been a success story for HSL, as it demonstrates the potential of Telehealth to transform the delivery of healthcare in Northern Ireland and beyond.

Results

Commenting on this exciting step in stroke care, consultant stroke physicians Dr Enda Kerr and Dr Michael McCormick said, “We are impressed by the simplicity and elegance of the solution that was presented to us by HSL. Being able to intervene, support our colleagues and conduct remote consultations with the patient from a tablet or phone has changed how we work and speeds up diagnosis and time critical treatments. Time is of the essence when treating someone who has had a stroke, so literally every minute counts. The Telehealth platform has the potential to make a significant contribution to improved patient outcomes after stroke, especially during late evening and overnight periods”.

Following on from the success of its previous lunch sessions with Belgian technology company Barco, Hospital Services Ltd (HSL) is working with healthcare trusts throughout the UK to launch a new lunch-time learning session for radiography teams.

Delivered by HSL’s application specialist, the X-rays: The Past, Present and Future session is CPD accredited, meaning all attendees who complete the session qualify for an HCPC submittable certificate.

The interactive lunchtime learning session which will include lunch provided by HSL, will look at the history of x-ray, from discovery of x-rays to first clinical use and key clinical waypoints, development of new imaging technologies, and the science behind CR and DR. The session will also delve into the future of x-ray and include learnings on glass-free detectors, dynamic digital radiography and artificial intelligence (AI).

As well as having a deeper understanding of the history of X-ray and the cutting-edge developments in x-ray imaging, radiography professionals will leave the session with more advanced knowledge of how CR and DR work including the physics behind them and how this influences exposure factor selection.

Hospital Services Limited specialises in healthcare solutions designed to provide healthcare professionals with the confidence they need to make accurate decisions. The distributor is encouraging radiography teams across the UK to book their lunch time learning session now to take advantage of a valuable in-person or virtual opportunity to engage with the HSL team exchange ideas around best practice and learn more about the history of x-ray and the development of the technology over time.

HSL – one of the largest privately-owned distributors to the health sector – has a rich heritage of supplying market leading, cutting-edge technologies and solutions to its customers as well as providing on-going technical and clinical support to the end-user. These ongoing lunchtime learning sessions provided by HSL are not only giving radiology teams the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills but are also recognising the outstanding work of radiography departments across the UK, whilst identifying best practice and areas of recent growth and change.

There is still time to reserve a space with the HSL team for a virtual or in-person session. To schedule an opportunity for your department, please email enquiries@hsl.co.uk.

Specialist distributor of medical supplies and surgical equipment, Hospital Services Limited (HSL) has had its next generation Telehealth solution approved for use with the emergency assessment of patients with suspected stroke in Northern Ireland.

HSL’s Telehealth system is already in place throughout hospitals and GP surgeries in the UK and Ireland and enables clinicians and consultants to carry out virtual, video consultations and diagnosis of patients.

HSL’s journey to establishing its Telehealth solution for stroke care began in June 2019 when HSL CEO Dominic Walsh introduced his idea to several of Northern Ireland’s leading consultants responsible for the diagnosis and care of patients presenting at the region’s A&E Departments with suspected stroke. Following the introduction of Telehealth for stroke care, clinical trials were agreed, and work began to convert a concept into a medical grade working and supportable solution which delivers more immediate care for stroke patients in Northern Ireland.

After receiving positive feedback from leading consultants across the board, the first integrations of the Telehealth solution are now in place and embedded within the infrastructure that runs all of the conferencing and collaboration technology for the Health Service in Northern Ireland. Commenting on this revolution in stroke care, HSL CEO Dominic Walsh said,

“We are extremely pleased that Telehealth for stroke care has been accepted by consultants across Northern Ireland. We believe that our Telehealth platform will transform the diagnosis of this condition as it will enable stroke consultants to support their clinical colleagues as soon as a patient presents at A&E, giving them the facilities they need to undertake a risk-free diagnosis of the extent and nature of the stroke and to provide timely, lifesaving interventions. We are privileged to be in a position to undertake such innovative and beneficial work for the magnificent people in our NHS.”

Commenting on this exciting step in stroke care, consultant stroke physicians Dr Enda Kerr and Dr Michael McCormick said,

“We are impressed by the simplicity and elegance of the solution that was presented to us by HSL.

Although remote diagnosis of patients presenting at a hospital with possible stroke symptoms has been available for several years, HSL’s Telehealth solution is different as it has the intelligence to enable the remote consultants to intervene from a tablet, smartphone or laptop. Previous virtual healthcare solutions ran on external systems, had no integration and relied on dedicated devices and network services to work. Discussing the Telehealth platform Sam McMaster, Director of Telehealth for HSL said,

“Our Telehealth platform presents to the consultant through a simple to use app that includes the features and facilities they need to undertake the initial diagnosis of the patient. This assures security, a simple and easy to use workflow, and the ability to include the results in the electronic care record for the patient.”

Innovation is one of HSL’s core values and ensuring customer and patient care is the company’s main priority. This technological solution provided by HSL will contribute to a better outcome for many patients affected by the instant repercussions of stroke as it becomes an integral part of the service delivered across all the Health & Social Care Trusts in Northern Ireland.
