A leading supplier of integrated healthcare solutions which specialises in the distribution of cutting-edge medical imaging devices, Hospital Services Limited is partnering with health trusts across the UK and Ireland to deliver solutions to improve imaging quality and streamline workflows whilst working within limitations presented by hospital architecture. Featuring a compact design which works with low ceiling heights, the Shimadzu RadSpeed Fit can be installed without the need for extensive and costly building works.

The Shimadzu RadSpeed Fit offers fantastic image quality and is equipped with a floating tabletop that can support up to 320kg, an X-ray tube that can be moved freely over a wide range for truly easy positioning, and a removable grid to reduce patient exposure. Additionally, with its high image quality due to the large output power and simple operability, the RadSpeed Fit offers a sense of ease and operational comfort for users. The system is also equipped with a high-power generator with a maximum tube current of 500 mA (32 kW type) or 630 mA (56 kW type), levels that are unprecedented in conventional floor-mounted X-ray rooms. This provides imaging quality comparable to high-end models and ensures consistency of X-ray image diagnoses.

The Shimadzu RadSpeed Fit is compatible with the newest Shimadzu 99µm Glassless detector and advanced imaging software including Vuno AI Chest screening and its easy-to-use floor-mounted system is designed for ease and comfort in radiography.

Commenting on how HSL has enabled trusts to upgrade their imaging technologies whilst working within budgetary and physical limitations in their facilities HSL’s Regional Director of Operations Steve Leatherland said, “HSL has over 60 years’ experience working in partnership with trusts across the UK and Ireland to ensure they are delivering a high standard of patient care whilst also working to maximise efficiencies and improve user experience for radiography teams.”

“Now, more than ever, healthcare trusts across the board are seeking out ways to optimise their limited budgets. Because of the high adaptability of the RadSpeed Fit to work within areas of the hospital with lower ceiling clearances, trusts can avoid costly building projects that could be required of other comparable equipment to create required headspace whilst remaining uncompromised on the high standard of imaging and diagnostics carried out within their departments,” Steve added.

HSL partners with hospitals and trusts throughout the UK on a wide range of imaging projects, from general x-ray equipment to more specialised products including cutting-edge flat panel C-Arm suites, image guided lithotripsy systems and high-end lasers. Its team works closely in partnership with radiology and surgical teams to develop an understanding of their needs and deliver technologies that meet requirements for accuracy, ease of use, durability, and user and patient experience whilst also providing comprehensive continued support for maintenance, calibration, testing and repairing when required.

In addition to supplying state of the art technologies for healthcare, HSL’s team provides a high level of continued support for trusts, offering continued training, maintenance, and servicing to ensure that standards are maintained beyond the installation phase of the project.
Many radiology departments across the UK have already discovered the benefits of teleradiology for shifting the reporting workflow away from the clinical setting and improving efficiencies in reporting. Following recent news of a £250 million investment in technology to improve diagnostics within the NHS in England, the value of home reporting as a solution to address the backlog, keep staff safe, and reduce the administrative load whilst freeing up more time for diagnostics and reporting is more evident now than ever.

Through its partnership with leading provider of premium display solutions LG, Hospital Services Limited (HSL) is not only facilitating the commission of an impressive volume of home reporting stations for trusts and private hospitals across the UK and Ireland, HSL also provides ongoing calibration and quality assurance services and offers independent assessment and maintenance of installations to ensure compliance and consistency whether at the hospital, clinic, office or home.

HSL and LG have partnered to deliver this technology into hospitals and clinics across the UK and Ireland over the past year following LG’s launch of their medical displays into the local market. The partnership most recently saw the commissioning of 49 diagnostic monitors delivered into the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust which will address the continued backlogs faced in Northern Ireland. By recreating the workplace environment in the home, LG and HSL are delivering a high level of professionalism, accuracy, and reliability for home reporting set-ups.

Working together to deliver efficiencies for resource-strapped radiologists, LG and HSL are reminding radiology teams of the importance of ongoing monitoring, calibration and maintenance of the at-home working environment to ensure it is best suited for the radiologist to undertake diagnoses.

Guidelines from the Royal College of Radiologists, ‘RCR Guidelines on Diagnostic Display Devices – Third edition Feb 2019’, contain strong recommendations in relation to diagnostic display devices and the ergonomic viewing environment and also advise that calibration of these devices is not just a one-off: “If commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) displays are chosen, a workplace must also operate and document a regular quality-control and calibration programme. Standards exist to ensure devices meet quality benchmarks throughout their working lifespans”. The report continues, “The viewing environment should be strictly controlled in the primary diagnostic setting. For clinical review the environment should be controlled as best achievable”. The NHS Breast Screening Programme (BSP) standard echoes the importance of ensuring quality control and continued calibration of screen set ups.

“Not only does home reporting offer a clear advantage for radiology departments under pressure, it can also encourage better access to specialists working within radiology teams as the patient is no longer constricted by geographical location,” said Graham Stewart, Commercial & Finance Director, HSL.

“Whilst the efficiencies and access provided by home reporting are certainly to be celebrated, it is of utmost importance that the quality of reporting and trust in diagnostics remains uncompromised. Healthcare providers owe it to their clinicians and patients to provide the best tools, an optimum environment, and correctly calibrated displays. To fully meet updated guidelines, our team supports the regular use of calibration software complimented with on-site visits to perform QA, calibration including 5 point uniformity, multi-monitor testing and visual pattern checks.” In addition to the maintenance and assessment of diagnostic tools and technologies, HSL’s specialist team also provides on-site ergonomic reports to help guide the implementation of the right solution for a friendly, ergonomic working environment for radiology professionals and wider disciplines including digital pathology.

We are happy to announce that we have successfully delivered a radiology project in partnership with the Department of Radiology at Blackpool Teaching Hospital, which will help the hospital’s radiology team continue to deliver an outstanding level of patient care and diagnostics. The streamlined radiology system will help the In-Patient Department of Radiology to facilitate the over 28,000 in-patients who pass through its general x-ray doors each year whilst increasing efficiencies to help address waiting times and improving patient experience.

Over the last year, we have consulted with Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, general X-ray team to supply a general x-ray room which can be used across a diverse patient demographic. The Shimadzu RADspeed Pro general radiographic system has provided an improved workflow for busy teams whilst also achieving dose reduction for patients.

“In addition to the streamlined workflow which the system offers that enables our team to treat more patients more effectively, the adaptability of the system means that the same technology can be used for diagnostic imaging of patients ranging from paediatrics to elderly patients,”

said Joanne Peacock, (Interim) General X-Ray Manager.

“The technology will also help our team to answer the growing demand for chest x-rays as patients dealing with prolonged ‘long-Covid’ symptoms continue to present with ongoing imaging requirements.”

The newly installed Shimadzu RADspeed pro system is our first installation of its type in England and Scotland and the first radiography project we have carried out within Blackpool Teaching Hospitals. In addition to providing a more intuitive and comfortable experience for radiographers and patients, the system also utilises image stitching software powered by Canon, where the x-ray is programmed to take several pictures and render them together into one larger x-ray image on screen for a more comprehensive view of the area being examined.

Commenting on the newly-forged relationship between HSL and Blackpool Victoria Hospital HSL CEO Dominic Walsh said,

“We are proud to have worked side by side with the Department of Radiology at Blackpool Victoria Hospital to ensure that the project delivered tangible benefits to the hospital’s radiography team and patients alike. The Shimadzu RADspeed Pro which has been installed within the Department is a truly robust and versatile piece of equipment which can be used for a wide range and high volume of patients to help improve patient through-put and streamline the workflow for the very busy radiography team.”

We are happy to announce agreement with Zoom, the leading global cloud services provider for video communications and collaboration, which will enable HSL customers to deliver integrated virtual care services for clinicians and patients, as well as being a tool for administration, medical education and existing hospital-based collaboration activities.

The agreement represents the alignment of HSL, one of the UK and Ireland’s leading medical supplies, surgical equipment, consumable products and telehealth solutions distributor to the healthcare sector with the globally recognised Zoom platform to deliver an exceptional level of seamless, highly secure, and user-friendly telehealth services for a wide range of healthcare implementations.

HSL is the first and only healthcare partner with Zoom in the UK and Ireland, and this partnership will provide us with an option to expand the availability and adoption of virtual consultations through a widely known app, enabling the broadest possible range of patients and the general public to access different parts of the healthcare system.

Telehealth solutions have been widely embraced by healthcare providers and patients alike during the ongoing pandemic and this new way of providing and accessing patient care is expected to endure within the local healthcare sector post-pandemic. The team at HSL predicts that within a year, every hospital in the UK and Ireland will be using Zoom in some part of their operations, and the availability of Zoom through a healthcare partner removes the risks of investing in this technology in many more parts of healthcare development and delivery.

Discussing the exciting new partnership for HSL Dominic Walsh, CEO, said:

“The opportunity to work with Zoom to embed their services with the solutions that we have been delivering to healthcare providers across the UK and Ireland brings together the power and capacity of the world’s largest provider in this space with committed, dedicated, specialists, products and services that HSL already supplies to our customer base.”

“The addition of this service to our growing portfolio of Telehealth enabled practices and solutions empowers our customers to deliver integrated virtual health platforms as part of their Covid management plans and in a way that they will remain as part of the health service beyond this pandemic.”

Ron Emerson, Global Healthcare Lead at Zoom Video Communications added,

“We are excited by the prospect of working with Hospital Services Limited to create more uses for Zoom in healthcare in the UK and Ireland in ways that will exploit the fantastic capabilities, current and future, that Zoom provides. I know and have worked with the HSL Telehealth team for many years and understand the specialist skills and experience they provide that can help healthcare providers to embrace and use Zoom to deliver benefit to clinicians and patients alike”.

Sam McMaster, Director of Telehealth for HSL finished with,

“The option to leverage the Zoom services as part of telehealth applications and virtual healthcare platforms offered by HSL brings a new and dynamic dimension to the market for these services.”

“Zoom is the app of choice for many people and has been used extensively in Medical Education for many years. Our ability to provide Zoom as a service for our customers in health and to integrate this with the clinical workflows that drive the health service to deliver secure, private safe virtual consultations will help our customers to transform the health service.”
