Our team recently had the opportunity to attend the EAU 2026 Congress in London, where we joined thousands of clinicians, researchers, and industry partners from across the world. As one of the most influential events in the urology calendar, it provided a valuable space to step back, take stock of where the field is heading, and, most importantly, spend time with many of our trusted partners.

One of the most striking aspects of the congress was the pace of innovation across every area of urology. From conversations on the exhibition floor to insights shared during scientific sessions, there was a clear sense that the field is moving steadily toward more precise, patient-centred care. In particular, developments continued refinement and evolution of endourology and urolithiasis care. Alongside this, imaging and diagnostics continue to evolve at an impressive rate. New technologies are enabling earlier and more accurate detection of disease, which in turn supports more personalised treatment decisions. It was encouraging to see how these innovations are no longer theoretical but increasingly being integrated into clinical practice.

Minimally invasive and image-guided therapies were another consistent theme throughout the event. Live and recorded procedural sessions highlighted how far techniques have progressed, with a strong focus on precision, recovery times, and overall patient experience. The shift toward less invasive approaches is clearly not just a trend, but a fundamental change in how urological care is delivered.

Beyond the science and technology, what made the experience particularly valuable for us was the opportunity to connect face-to-face with our urology partners. These conversations gave us a deeper understanding of the challenges clinicians are facing in real-world settings, as well as the opportunities to work together more closely. There is something uniquely powerful about being able to exchange ideas in person, and events like EAU continue to play a vital role in strengthening those relationships.

Leaving London, there was a strong sense that urology is entering an exciting phase, one defined by greater precision, better use of data, and closer collaboration across the healthcare ecosystem. The insights we gained and the discussions we had will directly inform how we continue to support our customers moving forward.

Overall, our time at EAU 2026 was both energising and thought-provoking. It reinforced the importance of staying connected to the wider urology community and remaining engaged with the innovations that are shaping the future of patient care. We are pleased to offer our full stone mangement solution The-Complete-Stone-Management-Solution-from-HSL-V6.pdf

As the value of home reporting as a solution to address the backlog, keep staff safe, and reduce the administrative load whilst freeing up more time for diagnostics and reporting is more evident now than ever continues to become more evident, Hospital Services Limited (HSL) continues to work with radiology departments across the UK to help them discover the benefits of teleradiology for shifting the reporting workflow away from the clinical setting and improving efficiencies in reporting.

A specialist distributor of medical and surgical equipment and consumable products which services public and private hospitals and clinics and other imaging institutions across UK and Ireland, HSL is one of the largest privately-owned distributors supplying the health sector in UK and Ireland.

Through its partnership with manufacturer of high-precision medical displays Barco, HSL is not only connecting healthcare professionals at every touchpoint by facilitating a growing volume of home reporting stations for trusts and private hospitals across the UK and Ireland, its wrap-around service also continues to ensure that the level of reporting carried out in home settings is equal to work being done from within dedicated radiology departments.

Working together to deliver efficiencies for resource-strapped radiologists, HSL and Barco are reminding radiology teams of the importance of ongoing monitoring, calibration and maintenance of the at-home working environment to ensure it is best suited for the radiologist to undertake diagnoses. In line with recommendations from the RCR in relation to diagnostic display devices and the ergonomic viewing environment and the importance of calibration of these devices, HSL’s team provides ongoing calibration and quality assurance services second to none complete with independent assessment and maintenance of installations to ensure compliance and consistency. To fully meet the RCR guidelines, HSL supports the regular use of calibration and QA software like Barco’s QA Enterprise software QAWeb, complemented by on-site visits including multi-monitor testing and visual pattern checks.

Whether at the hospital, clinic, office or home, regardless of the display devices chosen, HSL understands that diagnostic reporting is a crucial part in the provision of best patient outcomes by both NHS and private institutions, and that – all too often – the working environment is barely checked to ensure it is best suited for the radiologist to undertake all-important diagnosis, and when it is, frequent reviews are overlooked. With the trend of increased home reporting here to stay despite the easing of restrictions around the Covid-19 pandemic, healthcare providers owe it to their clinicians and particularly their patients to provide the best tools, an optimum environment, and correctly calibrated displays at all times.

HSL’s Bi-annual or Annual Diagnostic Home Reporting Service is available to all users who have purchased their home reporting workstations for the work or home environment. In addition to the maintenance and assessment of diagnostic tools and technologies, HSL’s specialist team also provides on-site ergonomic reports to help guide the implementation of the right solution for a friendly, ergonomic working environment for the medical professional.
Hospital Services Limited (HSL) applies innovative approach to space issues within healthcare sector through launch of The Acoustic Pod Collection

Specialist distributor of medical and surgical equipment, consumable products, and healthcare IT solutions, Belfast, Dublin and Midlands-based Hospital Services Limited (HSL) has announced an innovative new project which applies the company’s long-standing expertise in forward-thinking healthcare solutions through the customisation and supply of purpose-built, sound-proof workstations which can be adapted to a wide range of requirements by healthcare professionals.

With the launch of their new Acoustic Pod Collection, HSL is enabling healthcare professionals to create usable and secure work and consultation spaces within their existing facilities to allow for better collaboration amongst medical professionals and aid remote consultations and diagnostics between patients and their doctors.

The units range in size from the one-person Solo and Single Privacy Pods to larger Connect dual-person pods and Engage meeting pods which facilitate up to four people per pod. The exterior of these fully customisable pods is designed with steel and glass, with intricately fabricated acoustic panelling, foam, and sound-seclusion sealing guaranteeing privacy for confidential discussions and teleconferences. The ‘room within a room’ dynamic is ideal for open-plan workspaces and features include but are not limited to adjustable lighting, ventilation system, frosted glass for brand placement or privacy, worktables, upholstered bench seating, power outlet, data plugs, USB charging and other computer connections. HSL’s suite of technology from its Telehealth division can also be utilised, allowing for effortless software and hardware collaboration. The team proudly applies their expertise in supplying mobile and portable technologies for Diagnostic and Telehealth applications, and clients are fully encouraged and supported in their decision to customise their pods.

Innovation is one of HSL’s core values and ensuring patient care is the company’s main priority, and this technological solution will help ensure safety, efficiency and accessibility for healthcare practitioners and Oliver McDaniel, Director of Sales at HSL, was at the forefront of the rise in demand for this solution during the Covid-19 pandemic. “The Acoustic Pod Collection was designed to address two core issues relating to open plan environments,” said Oliver. “The ergonomic and functional pods are packed with the latest technology and custom features to supply acoustic and visual privacy.”

He added, “Healthcare teams are looking to connect with clients virtually in aid of social-distancing. But also, spaces may be re-purposed to allow for more video consultations and meetings. These pods are an ideal solution. Popular examples of how these pods are being used can be found within Radiology where images can be reviewed remotely, or within healthcare teams who are virtually collaborating internally to discuss a patient’s follow-up.”

Since the launch of HSL’s Acoustic Pod Collection this month, the company has already seen significant interest from a number of health trusts across the UK and Ireland. “We are well positioned to deliver these innovative meeting and workspace requirements to our clients because of our in-depth understanding of their needs and approaches which has been developed over years of close working side-by-side with our clients. We look forward to continuing to roll out our Pods over the coming months as healthcare professionals explore new ways to work through remote and socially-distanced approaches,” Oliver added.

Specialist distributor of surgical equipment Hospital Services Limited (HSL) has supplied and installed Ireland’s-first state-of-the-art ophthalmic laser within the ophthalmology department at UPMC Kildare Hospital. The Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8 laser will revolutionise the patient experience when it comes to laser eye surgery due to its less-invasive design and precise performance.

Whereas traditional microkeratome laser procedures use a blade to cut a flap into the cornea and allow lasers to reshape and correct the patient’s vision, the Ziemer femtosecond laser installed at UPMC Kildare Hospital offers a bladeless alternative. Using very short pulses of energy, the Ziemer laser creates tiny gas bubbles that employ the same entry incisions as the microkeratome laser procedure, without using a blade. The Ziemer laser results in clearer vision and no increase in visual complaints observed in the eyes after corneal refractive surgery, compared to the more common microkeratome procedure.

The technology will allow patients to avail of a more comfortable, individually tailored eye health experience by precisely pinpointing the locations at which it will separate the eye tissues, ensuring a custom procedure perfectly designed for each patient. To ensure the best possible surgical results, advanced patient interfaces for both cataract and corneal surgery have been developed especially for the Ziemer laser. The patient interfaces are one-piece devices with hydrogel contact lenses that are positioned within the laser to prevent corneal folds that can interfere with the introduction of the laser energy into the eye.

The highly flexible and intuitive articulated arm and the laser’s unique architecture enable for seamless integration into an ophthalmologist’s established surgical workflow. The unique design enables patients to stay in one place throughout the duration of their procedure, ensuring the highest degree of comfort for the surgeon and the patient as well as a sterile and more efficient procedure. The specially-designed laser delivers a gentler surgery as it uses very low energy, is ultrafast and is highly accurate. Patients will be left with minimal wound healing reactions and no damage to cells.

Innovation is one of HSL’s core values and ensuring patient care is the company’s main priority. This technological solution provided by HSL will help contribute to a better outcome for the large number of patients who undergo laser eye surgery each year at UPMC Kildare Hospital, resulting in superior eye health throughout Ireland.

Commenting on UPMC’s new Ziemer laser, HSL CEO Dominic Walsh said,

“We are delighted to introduce Ireland’s first Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8 ophthalmic laser to UPMC Kildare Hospital. The only hospital on the island of Ireland to currently have access to this world-class technology, UPMC Kildare Hospital is now leading the way for eye health in Ireland. The mobile laser will ensure optimum surgical results and patient comfort, which is vital for outstanding patient care. We are looking forward to seeing the great work that comes out of the ophthalmology department over the coming months and continuing to support the team in the roll out of this fantastic technology.”

It is the Ziemer laser’s versatility that allows ophthalmologists’ demands to be met through one innovative technology. It can be used during refractive laser eye surgery, laser cataract surgery, therapeutic procedures and for surgical planning by OCT imaging.

“To have Ireland’s first Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8 ophthalmic laser installed within UPMC Kildare Hospital is momentous for us,”

Said Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon Prof Michael O’Keefe.

“We are extremely thankful to the team at HSL for working with us over an eight-week period to install the technology and train our team on how to use the laser most efficiently and precisely. It is a huge privilege to be the first in Ireland to use the Ziemer Z8 model during vital eye surgeries, whilst being able to provide our patients with a more comfortable procedure that offers a higher chance of success.”

The Ziemer Z8 model has also been built with Lenticule Application – Corneal Lenticule Extraction for Advanced Refractive Correction (CLEAR) which is a newly developed and proprietary application intended for the treatment of Myopia (short-sightedness) and Astigmatism (uneven light focus causing blurriness). One of the key advantages of CLEAR is that cornea incisions can be crafted and positioned with a high degree of precision, thereby greatly improving the predictability, effectiveness and stability of such intricate procedures.

The mobile Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8 model is unique, offering the highest repetition rate of any femtosecond laser. The model features overlapping laser spots that result in, complete resections free of tissue bridges, smooth stromal beds, high precision and predictability and capsule edges that are hard to distinguish from edges seen in conventional surgery.
